Getting to know Firefly
Launched on April 3, 2007, Firefly, your community airline, is operated by Fly Firefly Sdn Bhd, and is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysian Airline System Berhad. Operating out of the Penang and Subang hubs, Firefly provides connections to various points within Malaysia, Southern Thailand, Singapore and Sumatera of Indonesia, aligning itself with the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) agenda.
Subang, home to a modern and convenient city airport, is the perfect touch point for leisure and business travellers. Plus, with our reputation for offering warm hospitality and excellent service, we believe our passengers will have a memorable experience on board.
Our aim is to bring communities closer by overcoming geographical constraints through our network of point-to-point flights, link the world to the communities we serve and contribute to local economies by growing trade and tourism. Thanks to our code-share arrangement with Malaysia Airlines, we’re also able to introduce the wonders of Southeast Asia to travellers from beyond this region.

What’s in a name
The name Firefly (in Mandarin fei ying; in Bahasa Malaysia Kunang-Kunang) was chosen to depict the airline’s characteristics, which are agility, brilliance, charm, and fun. Being unique and evocative, Firefly is easily recognisable and has the potential to grow and command a brand premium in the communities it serves.
- Agile
- Translated as an act that is well-coordinated, quick, active and lively, this is precisely the key characteristics we want to adopt. We aim for speed and ease of movement in managing our business as well as providing our services to ensure the well-being of our passengers.
- Brilliant
- Firefly is positioned as a brilliant light that captures the imagination. We engage that brilliance and imagination in our continuous effort in planning, leading, organising and operating our business to create the best community airline the world can offer.
- Charm
- Service is about charm and that’s what we strive to provide; to offer you a charming flying experience that you won’t forget and will keep you coming back for more!
- Fun
- As a young, growing organisation, we make it a point to align our goals with the right attitude that can be spelt in three letters: f.u.n. We adopt an upbeat working environment to produce fresh ideas with substance. A happy worker is a productive worker, and that is reflected in our service to our passengers.
Our Onboard Experience
To think of Firefly is to think of top-notch service! Add to that flights from strategic airports in Subang and Penang, Firefly passengers will have options to plan journeys that suit their schedule accordingly.
Turboprop aircraft experience
Our ATR-72-500 aircraft are almost vibration-free and surprisingly quiet. This is a twin turboprop aircraft optimised from the start for efficiency and passenger comfort. More importantly, our ATR-72-500 aircraft are safe.
Technologically advanced, fuel-efficient and eco-friendly, the ATR 72-500 offers the lowest seat-mile cost in its category. The ATR 72-500 can fly up to 2.5 hours with a maximum range on 890Nm without refuelling on a full passenger load.
The ATR 72-500 secondary structures are extensively made of corrosion-resistant composite material, and it uses carbon fibre for its outer wings and a composite tail, thus reducing weight further. A lighter aircraft translates to lower fuel consumption, which is also better for the environment.
The ATR 72-500 planes also offers spacious cabins with plush leather seats and soft ambient lighting for a more comfortable journey. Passengers will also enjoy complimentary refreshment served by attentive flight attendants, 20kg checked-baggage allowance and assigned seating at the cost of an all-inclusive fare.
At present we have 12 ATR-72-500 aircraft.
